Which Safety Harness Should I Buy?

Safety Harness

When you need a safety harness, you are going to have to do thorough research first. Safety is not something to take lightly, and you don’t want to buy a piece just because it’s cheap, only to have it malfunction at the worst possible time. Luckily, there’s a wide variety of different safety harness models and styles on the market today, and you’ll certainly be able to find something you’ll love. Still, because there are so many to choose from, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to help you out. Read on to find out more about different safety harnesses and which ones you should buy.

The right height for a harness

As you are well aware by now, any type of safety harness you have should be worn at all times when you’re involved in an activity that can be labeled as high-risk. It doesn’t matter if you’re taking up rock climbing or you’re a professional window washer that climbs buildings daily – you need your own high-quality harness. In the general industry, OSHA requires that you wear fall protection for any height change of 4 feet or more, and regardless of the country you live in, it’s a good rule to follow. The height safety limit, on the other hand, is somewhere about 20 feet off the ground. Once you start working, you should wear cables if there’s a risk of falling from a height that’s greater than 20 ft. In addition to this, you can be required to wear an industrial safety harness if you’re working a heavy-duty job such as construction or mining.

Safety harness for full body

There are also safety harnesses that cover a person’s entire body from head to toe. While it might seem like too much for some, they are incredibly popular in certain industries. Contrary to popular beliefs, they are extremely lightweight and can be put on quickly. In addition to this, they come with plenty of attachment points that can be used for safety lanyards or some other safety equipment. There are downsides too, and most of them are related to the airflow (or lack thereof). Full-body safety harnesses can and will be hot in warm weather conditions, which is why many people opt out of using one. This is especially the case for those who have to be agile and move a lot.

Fall arrest

Fall arrest harnesses have specially designed lines to catch you in case you suddenly lose your footing. There are two types available – those that are intended to use near ground level as well as those meant for much higher elevation work. Depending on your line of work, it’s important to pick a fall safety harness that’s easy to put on, take off but also transport from one place to another. So, depending on whether you’re working on ladders, stairs, scaffolds, or buildings, there are different models to choose from. There are even safety harnesses made with Kevlar that are designed to be used in situations where there is a risk of heat or sparks.

B-type safety harness

This is the simplest type of safety harness – essentially a safety belt that has loops at either end that you secure around your waist. Fortunately, these types of harnesses are available in a full-body version or a short version, depending on what you need. Bull body version is used by those who climb large structures, such as building frames or cranes. On the other hand, shorter versions will likely work better for those who are working on scaffolding that’s close to the ground. The best thing about these types of harnesses is that they can be fitted very quickly, and you can easily adjust them to your body size. What is more, they are very lightweight, which makes them a great addition to hiking and climbing gear.

Finding the right safety harness for your line of work, body type, and budget is not an easy feat, which is why you should be prepared to invest some time into research first. Think about all the features you need (not just the ones you want), and try to find the one that meets them all. Don’t go for a full-body safety vest just because you really like it if it’s not something that’s best for your line of work. Your safety is not something you want to compromise on, so when you make a purchase, make sure it was the best possible one.
